Citizen Initiative in Assisting in Speed Control

Police and Fire Staff Group PhotoAbout the Program

The South Portland Police Department has an innovative program whereby local volunteers work with the police department to raise community awareness and encourage voluntary compliance by motorists of the posted and residential speed limits.

The Citizen Initiative in Assisting in Speed Control is not an enforcement program. This local initiative is designed to encourage community members to take an active part in keeping their neighborhood and community safe. Volunteers for this program must be at least 18 years old.

How It Works

The Police Department's Traffic Specialist Officer recruits and trains volunteers from the community on how to use the speed monitoring equipment. The Traffic Specialist coordinates volunteer details in our school zones on a rotating basis. Volunteers work in pairs to monitor and record traffic speed.
