New Works of Public Art to be Unveiled This Month in South Portland

News Releases Posted on May 14, 2025

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The City of South Portland Public Arts Committee invites the community to check out two exciting public art unveilings during the month of May.

Mill Cove Apartments Public Mural

Starting this month, artist Erica Sedler will install a large-scale permanent mural celebrating the Greenbelt Trail and unique ocean views of South Portland. The mural will be installed on an exterior wall of the Mill Cove Apartments at 2 Soule Street (near the intersection of Cottage Rd. and Broadway).

The mural is sponsored by the City of South Portland in partnership with the South Portland Housing Authority. It is part of the City's 2024-2025 Capital Improvement Program to enhance the gateway to Mill Creek. Funding for the project was sourced entirely from the City’s Downtown Municipal Development Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Program, which are funds generated by the district and reinvested in economic development initiatives and infrastructure within and related to the district.

Temporary Silk Paintings Public Art Installation Saturday, May 17 (Rain Date May 18)

For one day only, artist Haley Nannig will install “Living Edges,” a collection of temporary silk paintings at Fisherman’s Point (at the end of Deake St.) to honor the history of the iconic fishing shacks and the fragility of our changing waterfront. The paintings trace the shacks through time, from their beginnings over a century ago to their final collapse – and to what remains in the wake of loss. The paintings draw heavily on visual references gathered from the Maine Memory Network and the South Portland Historical Society’s online archives. This work was made possible in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The public can experience “Living Edges” at Fishermen’s Point from dawn until dusk on Saturday, May 17, 2025. The rain date is Sunday, May 18, 2025.
