Did you know? Americans buy around 600 million pounds of candy each Halloween season, and the scary truth is in most places the wrappers are not recyclable. But South Portlanders are in luck! Our local zero-waste, plastic free store, Go-Go Refill, will have a candy wrapper collection box again this year. Candy wrappers will be sent to TerraCycle for processing, and the collected waste will be cleaned, melted, and remolded into pellets that can be used to make new products. Please visit GoGo Refill at 64 E Street. Alternatively, you can get your own TerraCycle candy wrapper collection box to use with your neighbors. TerraCycle offers lots of other resources for recycling solutions and upcycling craft ideas. For more information, visit their site on The Spooky Truth About Snack Waste.
And remember that your Pumpkin is compostable! After roasting and enjoying the seeds, please compost your pumpkin, donate it to a local farm for a food source for livestock, or drop it off at one of the five City food waste drop-off sites.
