The South Portland Police Department (SPPD) is one of only four municipal agencies in Maine accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). CALEA is a voluntary, non-governmental credentialing authority that promotes professional excellence in public safety by maintaining standards and offering accreditation programs for law enforcement agencies.
SPPD is currently undergoing the process for re-accreditation with CALEA. As part of the assessment process, CALEA provides a web-based public comment portal to allow community members to provide feedback. The posting of this portal is required under CALEA Law Enforcement Standard 45.2.3.
The purpose of this public comment portal is to gather input on the South Portland Police Department’s compliance with CALEA standards, engagement with the community, delivery of public safety services, and overall performance as a candidate for re-accreditation. Comments may include commendations or concerns and are an important part of the department’s continuous improvement efforts and commitment to professional excellence. We invite you to submit your comments today.
Please Note: CALEA is not an investigatory agency. Therefore, the public comment portal should not be used to submit complaints or request investigations. To file a formal complaint or commendation, please contact the South Portland Police Department directly.
Additionally, those submitting comments will receive only an acknowledgment of receipt. All submissions will be reviewed for relevancy to CALEA standards and considered in the accreditation process.
