Petrlik Conservation Area is a 37 acre parcel of land that is managed as a nature preserve. The park offers 2 miles of maintained trails that go through several ecosystems including meadow, wetland, upland forest, and vernal pool area. In order to help us preserve this unique and diverse parcel, we ask that you leave your dogs and bikes at home and always stay on the existing trails.

The meadow is home to a variety of wildflowers, including crucial milkweed- the host plant for monarch caterpillars. A variety of birds such as the Eastern Bluebird, the American Goldfinch, Northern Flicker, and the Eastern Wild Turkey- among many others- use the meadow, with species varying by season.

The wetlands and vernal pools act as habitat for a variety of amphibians and reptiles including garter snakes, wood frogs, yellow spotted salamanders, and more. Be sure to stay on the trail as these ecosystems are particularly susceptible to foot traffic.

The upland forest trail will take you past many species of deciduous trees, including the beloved birch clusters. Along the way you can also see shade loving plants, like ferns and holly, and if you go on the right day, a variety of mushrooms.

This property was acquired by the City of South Portland through the Open Space Acquisition Committee (OSAC) in 2025. Work is currently being done to improve the trails (adding in benches and picnic tables), increase parking, and add educational signage.
