SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The City of South Portland Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department will be holding its fifth Annual Youth Triathlon in honor of South Portland’s own Nathan Savage. Nathan was passionate about family exercise, promoting physical activity, and giving back to the community. The main goal of this event is to expose youth to the great sport of triathlons and to have fun! The aim is to encourage self-confidence and promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
WHEN: Packet Pickup & Bike Drop Off: Friday, June 21, 2024 from 5:00-6:30 PM; Race Day: Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 9:00 AM
WHERE: South Portland Community Center, 21 Nelson Rd, South Portland, Maine 04106
WHO: Youth ages 7-14
WHY: The City established the South Portland Youth Triathlon in 2019 in honor of South Portland’s Nathan Savage. Nathan tragically passed away in 2016 while training for the Lake Placid Ironman. The competition was to be his 40th birthday present to himself. The day before his death, Nathan proudly rode 100 miles around Mount Desert Island, including an ascent up Cadillac Mountain. The Annual Youth Triathlon was designed to embody Nathan’s energy, passion, humor, and dedication.
All proceeds from this race benefit the Nathan Savage Youth Program Scholarship Fund that the Parks, Recreation & Waterfront established in 2016 with proceeds from the Savage Family Turkey Trot, a Thanksgiving Day road race organized each year by Nathan’s wife, Nellie. The Scholarship Fund allows South Portland youth to participate in recreation programs they may not otherwise be able to.
“Although I did not know Nathan personally, it’s apparent how much of an impact he has made, and continues to make, in the South Portland community. Nathan’s three daughters (Maizie, Charlie and Reese) and wife Nellie carry on his legacy and positive impact through volunteering at this great community event,” said Deputy Director of Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Anthony Johnson.
“We’re extremely thankful to the Savage family for their generosity and for encouraging youth to live healthy, active lifestyles.”
The race begins with a 75-meter swim in the Community Center pool, continues with a 1.2-mile bike ride around the Community Center and High School campus, and concludes with a .7-mile run around the High School stadium track. This year, the race is sponsored by Trademark Federal Credit Union.
Registration for the Youth Triathlon closes on Wednesday, June 19. There will be no day-of registration. To register, please visit: www.sopoparksrec.com
