South Portland Police Department Hosts Drug Take Back Event

News Releases Posted on April 23, 2024

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Saturday, April 27, 2024, the South Portland Police Department (SPPD) hosts its annual Drug Take Back Event from 10 AM to 2 PM at SPPD headquarters, 30 Anthoine St.

Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue. They can lead to accidental poisoning, misuse and overdose. Disposing of drugs properly saves lives and protects the environment. SPPD invites the public to drop off any unused or expired prescription medications during the event.

The Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Agency spearheads National Take Back Day each year. During the last event, law enforcement agencies at 4,675 collection sites across the country collected a total of 300 tons of prescription drugs. Since the program began, 8,950 tons of medication have been collected and properly disposed of.

SPPD encourages members of the public to bring their unwanted prescription medications to the event. SPPD volunteers will accept medications outside the Police Department in a drive-thru drop-off area. Volunteers will also separate medications from pill bottles and recycle the containers – which resulted in 12 bags of recyclables at the last Drug Take Back event! SPPD thanks its VIPs (Volunteers in Policing) for making this event possible.
