Greenbelt Portion Reopens as Betsy Ross Crossing Welcomes Tenants

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (July 14, 2025) –  A portion of the Greenbelt Walkway in South Portland reopened this week as construction wraps up on South Portland Housing Authority’s Betsy Ross Crossing, a new affordable housing project for seniors.

A quarter-mile section of the Greenbelt Pathway, detoured since late 2023, is now open following the completion of Betsy Ross Crossing—a five-story, 52-unit addition to the existing Betsy Ross House independent living complex for seniors.

The Greenbelt Walkway is a popular 5.6-mile off-road trail used by thousands of hikers and residents each year. It runs from the Wainwright Athletic Complex near Scarborough’s town line to the historic Bug Light Park, where Liberty Ships were built during World War II. In South Portland, the path runs along Broadway, Preble Street, and Henley Street, passing directly through the Betsy Ross property.

“We really appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility with the detour, and the community support we’ve seen through the process,” South Portland Housing Authority Director Mike Hulsey said. “Betsy Ross Crossing is now open, and able to support our seniors who need affordable housing.”

Betsy Ross Crossing addresses the growing need for affordable senior housing in the region. Leasing is underway, with the first residents moving in on July 23. The new building expands the Betsy Ross campus to 175 total units—123 of which were established when the original complex opened in 1999.

The new development offers modern, accessible apartments with on-site resident services, free Wi-Fi, a meal plan, and organized activities. Located directly on the Greenbelt, residents enjoy walkable access to Bug Light, Southern Maine Community College, and Willard Beach.

Betsy Ross Crossing is open to seniors aged 55 and older with limited incomes. Income limits range from $54,540 for a one-person household to $77,880 for a four-person household. Rents average $1,332 per month for a one-bedroom unit, with the two-bedroom unit renting for $1,597.
