How Can I Help Prevent COVID-19 From Spreading?
- Get vaccinated. If you’re already vaccinated, encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to get vaccinated.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. Always wash your hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
- Cough and sneeze into your sleeve, not your hands, or use a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Stay home when sick.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects (like your cell phone) and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- If you’re not feeling well, or if you’re in a large crowd, wear a mask. Learn more about effective masking at the CDC's website.

Lead poisoning might sound like a problem from the past, but it is still a concern in Maine today. It only takes a tiny amount of dust from lead paint - about as much as a few grains of sand - to have a serious effect on a child’s growth and development. Lead paint can be found in any building built before 1978, but most lead paint is in homes built before 1950. Children younger than 6 years old and pregnant people are most vulnerable to lead poisoning.
To protect against lead poisoning, test homes and apartments built before 1978. Detailed information about blood lead testing, cleaning older homes, and safe renovations can be found on the Maine Department of Health and Human Services Environmental Health - Lead page.
Maine CDC provides free lead dust test kits, available on their Lead Kit Request webpage. Maine CDC can also be reached for questions or test kits at 207-287-4311.
Maine Indoor Air Quality Council has been working in partnership with the U.S. EPA to develop, distribute, and train the landlord/tenant community on better ways to prevent and address mold in rental properties. Visit their Rental Properties page for a toolkit for preventing and addressing moisture problems in rental properties, infographics, videos, and other resources for approaching this problem in rental properties.
